Visiting Mariaberg
Members of the Beforelight group visited Mariaberg’s neighborhood in early April, in order to “outline” the everyday life,
be inspired by its activities and create a map of the area on which we can intervene with a light installation in a few months.
We found great interest in the fact that the neighborhood, which is divided into sub-regions with characteristic differences in architecture and social structure. The center of Mariaberg is the main square, Fatima Plein, which is dominated by one Church. We find remarkable that fact that this church, which could be a “center” of activity and aggregation (probably it once was) is now closed, while rumors say that it will be demolished if no one buys it!
The location itself but also the fact that the prominent building at night is totally dark (while the streets around it are sufficiently illuminated), intrigued us to focus there and reactivate, with a lighting intervention, this dark place, to create, in a way, an attraction for the neighborhood.
Our goal is to intervene on the building of the Church with an installation that will create a playful challenge for the residents’ participation and ideally, to change the nocturnal landscape of Mariaberg.
Have a closer look to Mariaberg residents and stay tuned for updates on the upcoming Urban Lightscapes activities.
